The first energy project in the Philippines with zero opposition at the Public Hearing of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) held in Puerto Princesa’s Underground River Area, Sabang on 22nd September 2015.
The Sabang Renewable Energy Corporation’s (SREC) project, also called the “Sabang Project”. This project has the following features: a solar PV power plant of 1.4 MW, a clean battery pack of 1.7 MWh (the largest clean battery in South East Asia), 1 MW of diesel generators and a 15 km smart grid aiming to supply 24/7 power to about 650 small and large off-takers in the concession area in a close to carbon neutral manner. The total savings are 21,514 tons CO2 emissions in 20 years. The total carbon savings is equivalent to saving approximately 9,100,000 liters of gasoline, or 7,136 hectare of carbon sequestering forest of the size of 9,994 soccer fields!
The design of this hybrid power infrastructure was determined by the conditions of the area being classified as a nature reserve to protect the catchment area of the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the 7th World Wonder as it is one of the longest underground river in the world.
SREC, being aware of the induced urbanization in Barangay Cabayugan after its electrification, has also prepared an Image Quality Plan for Sabang to provide concepts and guidelines for sustainable development (“green growth”) of the area with a focus on use of space in the forest, aesthetics and architecture. This is aiming to avoid that electrification leads to negative impacts for Puerto Princesa. The City Government and the Barangay Council contributed to this plan that was prepared by experts from WEnergy Global Pte Ltd and the City Government’s Planning Department. The power plant is designed to set an example for encouraging local architecture and renewable energy generation. The power plant includes an Expo Center aiming to invite tourists (almost 85% of all the 300,000 tourist travelling to the PPUR are Philippine nationals) to learn about renewable energy in the ‘energy mix’. This Expo Center will work closely with the City Government and several other national and international parties to enhance awareness in the area of renewable energy and energy-saving technologies.
